October 28th saw the conclusion of the 2018 edition of the International Genetically Engineered Machine (iGEM) competition. The competition was established by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 2004 and is the world’s premier synthetic biology competition for university students. Each year the competition attracts more than 300 teams from 40 countries around the world with many of the world’s top universities sending teams to compete. This year’s edition took place over 4 days and HBUT’s team was lead by Dai Jun, Tang Jingfeng and Liu Zhijie from the school of Bioengineering and Food. HBUT’s team was awarded a silver medal successfully replicating the success of last year’s team, further enhancing HBUT’s reputation in the field of synthetics.

Preparation for the competition started last December with 16 students being selected to take part in the process after a rigorous selection process. After the culmination of 11 months of hard work on the project Xiong Sizhen, Liu Yuanlin, Wu Yudan, Liu Kai, Lin Weiqiao and Li Qiang were selected to travel to Boston to represent HBUT during the competition proper.

The first stage of the competition commenced on the 25th of October with HBUT’s team delivering a stellar presentation in English. The students took the opportunity to inform the judges about their project ‘NickleHunter 2.0’ a refinement of HBUT’s 2017 entry ‘Nicklehunter’  which aims to create a bio sensor using synthetic biological technology to detect, remove and destroy harmful nickle ions from the natural environment.

After the initial presentations on the first day the teams had the opportunity to mingle and scrutinize each others projects and posters with each team also being visited by the judges. During the visits from the judges the team had a chance to present their posters as well as discuss their project with the judges. HBUT’s team performed admirably with the judges complimenting the high quality of their research.

When the results were announced the team were delighted to discover that they had once again been placed in the silver band along with world famous and prestigious universities such as Stanford University, Yale University, the University of Toronto, Kyoto University, Fudan University and Huazhong University of Science and Technology.

Part of the success in this years competition is also owed to HBUT’s leadership which gave a great deal of help in order to ensure the success of the project. The school of Bioengineering and Food generously provided funding and practice space for the students to conduct their research, the Academic Affairs office took the reigns during the selection process and made sure that HBUT had a balanced and dependable team and the Department of International Relations assigned Chen Han and native English speaker Dan Churchman to assist the students with their English training and improving their presentation skills.

HBUTs involvement in this competition is part of an initiative to create opportunities for more students to take part in international competitions as it provides a platform for students to improve their understanding of their respective fields and also their English proficiency. This competition in particular has been conducive in improving our students understanding of biological theories, improving their research methodology and stimulating their creativity.
