On October 6,  President Liu Defu sent a letter to Professor Bill Flanagan, President of the University of Alberta, an important strategic partner of our school, congratulating Professor Michael Houghton, a virologist at the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry of University of Alberta, for winning the 2020 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine.

On October 5, 2020, Michael Houghton won the 2020 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for the discovery of the hepatitis C virus (HCV). As a result, Professor Houghton became the second recipient of this award in 97 years from a Canadian university. Professor Houghton and his colleagues have been conducting research on a new strain of hepatitis since 1989 and are committed to improving the safety of blood transfusions. His discovery of hepatitis C virus enabled its rapid detection. By 1992, blood that containedthe hepatitis C virus had been almost completely removed from the blood bank. By 1996, the number of hepatitis C patients worldwide had been reducing by 80% every year.Since 2010, Professor Houghton and his team have devoted themselves to researching vaccines against liver cirrhosis and liver cancer to treat liver disease in patients with hepatitis C. Based on his discovery of the hepatitis C virus, the current antiviral therapy can effectively treat 95% of hepatitis C virus carriers, saving millions of lives. This is also the first long-term viral disease that has be cured in human history. At present, Professor Houghton and his team are working day and night to develop a COVID-19 vaccine. He successfully developed the SARS (SARS-COV-1) vaccine in 2004.

In the congratulatory letter, Liu Defu, on behalf of the teachers and students of our university, expressed his warmest congratulations to Professor Houghton and the University of Alberta for this outstanding academic achievement, and the highest respect to Professor Houghton and his team for their infinite enthusiasm towards scientific research and their commitment to the pursuit of human welfare as well as their firm conviction and tireless efforts over the years.

Liu Defu said that the achievements of Professor Houghton are not only the pride of himself and his team, but also the pride of the University of Alberta, the pride of Canada, and the pride of all mankind! It once again proves that when human beings face diseases and natural disasters, the rigorous and realistic scientific attitude and the spirit of inquiry for excellence are the magic weapon to overcome. At present, there are about 10 million people infected with hepatitis C virus in China, and about 330,000 people die every year from cirrhosis and primary liver cancer caused by hepatitis B or C. This discovery made by Professor Houghton and his colleagues has also benefited thousands of ordinary Chinese people. We are grateful for this.As COVID-19 is raging around the world, human life and health are facing unprecedented challenges. As the former epicenter of the epidemic, Wuhan has also undergone severe tests in the past six months. During the period, many leaders and professors of the University of Alberta sent their concerned greetings and thoughts, which made us very encouraged. The friendship between our two universities has also become more profound and sincere in this epidemic.

In his congratulatory letter, Liu Defu pointed out that diseases and viruses are eternal challenges facing mankind. In today's global society, we deeply feel that scientific research knows no borders, and global cooperation knows no borders. Only when we join hands, unite sincerely, and overcome the strengths of the times, can we maintain human life and health. We look forward to continuing to maintain close cooperation with the University of Alberta and work together to seek the sustainable development of human civilization and its well-being.
