School of Industry Design

The major of Product Model Design at Hubei University of Technology was founded in 1983 to meet the demands for domestic product design. It was one of the earliest product design majors among polytechnic colleges of the nation. Over the last 30 years, the major has cultivated numerous outstanding industrial design innovation and management talents for the nation, and “Hugong Design” has become a distinctive education brand. It has taken a leading position in the field of college art design education in Hubei.

In January 2015 – to gear up for the national strategy of “Made in China 2025” that intends to transform China from a large manufacturing country to a powerful manufacturing country, along with the “Industry 4.0” plan of Germany, and the transformation and upgrading of the manufacturing industry –  the Product Design major of the School of Art Design and the Industrial Design major of the School of Mechanical Engineering were merged into the School of Industrial Design.

After being granted the right to confer master’s degree accreditation in 1996, the school has won many honors including Provincial Key Course, Provincial Unique Course, Provincial Top Course, etc. The school has two excellent provincial courses, one Hubei Chutian Scholar Base, one Provincial Humanities and Social Sciences Key Research Base, one Provincial Industrial Design Center, one Provincial Outstanding Teaching Team, and one Provincial Experiment and Demonstration Center.

The school adheres to the philosophy of Green Industrial Design and the mission of cultivating industrial design engineers and industrial product designers with a knowledgeable background in engineering. The school has 30 teachers, of which 13 are professors or assistant professors (July 2015). Total number of students is 900, of which 100 are postgraduate students. The school has three undergraduate courses (Industrial Design, Product Design, and Toy Design) and 3 master’s degree courses, namely Design Science (industrial design), Master of Fine Arts (MFA, industrial design), and Industrial Design Engineering. The Product Design major has been approved by the Ministry of Education. In 2012, the school joined with the University of Wisconsin to launch an international cooperative education program.
