Graeme Base, the famous Australian master of picture books, came to our school on March 15th, accompanied by officers from the Australian Embassy in China. Mr. Base visited our School of Art Design to give a lecture themed, “Imagine Easily”.


Graeme Base is a world-renowned creator of Children's picture books. He graduated in Graphic Design from Swinburne University of Technology, Melbourne, Australia. Graeme Base has displayed excellent talent in painting, writing, and music since he was a student. In his nearly 30 year long career, these three skills have given his works wonderful expression; today, many of his works enjoy great prestige around the world. For example, Animalia, Uno's Garden, The Water Hole, Eye to Eye, and The Eleventh Hour. His works have won numerous awards, such as The Green Earth Picture Book Award in America, the Dromkeen Medal, The Wilderness Society's Annual Environment Award for Children's Literature, and The Australian Children's Book Association “book of the year”. His works are also regular attenders on theNew York Times Bestseller list.


This is the first time for Mr. and Mrs. Base to visit China. They were invited by the Embassy of Australia to come here to participate in the cultural exchange activities of "Australian Literature Week in China", the cultural exchange activities of which were hosted by the Embassy of Australia.


Our vice president, Prof. Zhang Yingjiang, attended the activity and gave the opening speech for Graeme Base's lecture. The lecture was hosted by Ms. Long Yan, director of the Department of International Relations. Over 400 people, consisting of the leaders and representatives of teachers and students from the School of Art Design, listened to the lecture. During the lecture, Graeme Base introduced his works and his unique style of children's picture books. He also stressed the importance of imagination which, according to his words, was the heart of creation. The lecture met with great success. The teachers and students all agreed that they were inspired by the lecture and learned much from it.
