On the afternoon of May 17th, the 105th "International Communication Salon for Faculty Members (Special Edition) and the 2018 Teacher Development Seminar of the School of Foreign Languages were held in the conference room on the 10th floor of the Wenke Building. The theme of the Salon was “English Fun Reading Teaching Method”. The speaker was Diane Berthelot, an American foreign teacher of our university. Ms. Long Yan, Director of the Department of International Relations, Professor Lu Xiuhong, Associate Dean of the School of Foreign Languages, Professor Yang Youwen, Associate Dean of the School of Foreign Languages, and more than 80 teachers from the School of Foreign Languages attended the salon.
Diane has been teaching for 7 years at Hubei University of Technology. She is currently teaching for the Sino-Czech joint program of the School of Economics and Management. At the same time, Diane creatively proposed “English Fun Reading Teaching Method” during her teaching. After four semesters of practice, the students have made enormous progress from their initial “mute English” levels.
She pointed out there are two keys in English learning: one is pronunciation, the other is reading. In reading, one will acquire perception, creativity, and critical thinking skills unconsciously. This type of learning is suitable for groups of different ages and English levels.
This sharing has resonated with the teachers of the Foreign Language School. They will hold a workshop on Fun Reading soon, in order to play a positive role in promoting the reform of the traditional Chinese-style English teaching.
It is reported that the International Communication Salon for Faculty Members organized jointly by the Center of the Faculty Development and the Department of International Relations has held 105 issues since its inauguration in 2016. Over 3,000 faculty members have participated in the salons for free and have benefited a great deal from it.
