School of International Education Hosted The “Spring Day Gathering” Chinese Culture Activities For International Chinese Day

Date:2023-04-21

April 20 is the Grain Rain Day among the 24 solar terms and the 14th International Chinese Language Day of the United Nations. In order to promote exchanges and mutual understanding among civilizations and to tell Chinese stories well, School of International Education organized the "Spring Day Gathering" Chinese Culture Activities to celebrate the 14th International Chinese Language Day. The Chinese and international students gathered together to experience the diversity of Chinese culture. Nearly 100 international students from more than 10 countries, including Morocco, Kazakhstan, Bangladesh, Congo and others, participated in this Chinese cultural experience activity to celebrate this festival together.

Students from the "YinYun" Traditional Chinese Orchestra of the HBUT Student Art Troupe brought a wonderful " Sound of Spring " classic Chinese music performance. They introduced the long history and culture of four different musical instruments, guzheng, erhu, pipa and bamboo flute, and played classic songs such as " Spring View of Jiangnan " and "A Travel to Suzhou" and others. Chinese teachers from the Department of International Chinese Language Education of SIE brought various forms of traditional Chinese cultural experience activities such as "Shape of Spring" calligraphy experience, "Color of Spring" paper-cutting experience, and "Flavor of Spring" tea art experience.

A number of international students who came to the event said that the " Spring Day Gathering" Chinese Culture Experience activity allowed them to experience the beauty and the richness of Chinese culture. Through the experience of listening to spring, writing spring, cutting spring and drinking spring, they gained a more profoundly understanding of China's elegant traditional culture. They hope that during their studies in China, they could have more opportunities to learn about China's history, culture and social development, and promote people from all over the world to a better life through mutual learning among civilizations.

In order to emphasize the importance of linguistic and cultural diversity and promote the equal use of the six official working languages of the United Nations, in 2010, the United Nations Department of Public Information announced the launch of UN Language Day. In the same year, the Permanent Mission of China to UN proposed that Chinese Day be set on April 20th every year, the traditional Chinese solar term "Grain Rain", to commemorate the contribution of Cang Jie, the "ancestor of Chinese characters". In 2023, the Center for Language Education and Cooperation of the Ministry of Education cooperated with ChinesePlus to hold the "International Chinese Language Day" with the theme of "Chinese: Facilitating Dialogues across Civilizations".
