The College of Biological Engineering and Food of Hubei University of Technology was founded in 1978. For more than 40 years, the college has always taken the educational concept of "student-centered", output-oriented, and constantly optimized the talent cultivation mechanism to provide high-quality talents for national and local economic development and social construction. There are four departments and two centers in the college, namely, Department of Biological Engineering, Department of Biomedicine, Department of Food Science and Engineering, Department of Pharmaceutical Engineering, Science Experiment Center and Teaching Experiment Center.

The faculty is strong. There are 145 faculty members, 18 doctoral supervisors, 90 master supervisors, 30 professors and 48 associate professors. There are 35 high-level talents in the college, including 1 at the national level and 34 at the provincial level. There is one teaching team in Hubei Province.

The College has four master's degree programs in light technology and engineering, bioengineering, food science and engineering, and pharmacy, and one master's degree program in biology and medicine. Light Industry Technology and Engineering is a domestic first-class discipline construction discipline and an advantageous discipline in Hubei Province. Biological engineering and food science and engineering are the special disciplines in Hubei Province. The discipline of food science and engineering has been selected as a world class discipline in soft science for three consecutive years. Agricultural science and engineering science are listed in the top 1% of ESI.

The College has five undergraduate majors: Bioengineering, Food Science and Engineering, Pharmaceutical Engineering, Biopharmaceutical, and Biotechnology. The major of biological engineering is a national "double first-class" undergraduate major construction point, a national characteristic major construction point, a brand major in Hubei Province, and a pilot major of comprehensive reform in Hubei Province. The major of Food Science and Engineering is a national "double first-class" undergraduate major construction point, which has passed the engineering education accreditation, the project of Hubei Province Strategic Emerging Industry Talent Training Program, and the project of Hubei Province "Jingchu Excellent Agricultural and Forestry Talents Cooperative Education Program". The major of pharmaceutical engineering is a national "double first-class" undergraduate major construction point, which has passed the engineering education accreditation, Hubei Province "Jingchu Excellence Engineer Co-cultivation Program" project, and national demonstration virtual simulation experimental teaching project.

The College has 1649 students, 1063 undergraduates, 557 graduate students, 29 doctoral students and 17 international students. The undergraduate students' further study rate has averaged 45% in the past two years, ranking first in the university. Students have won many awards in domestic and international competitions, such as the International Genetic Engineering Machine Competition, the "Youth Creation" National Student Entrepreneurship Competition, the National Student Life Science Competition, the National Student Life Science Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition, the National Student Pharmaceutical Engineering Design Competition, and the Hubei Wine Body Design Competition. The "International Cooperation Training Program for Innovative Talents in Cell Regulation and Molecular Medicine", an international high-level talent training program jointly declared with the University of Alberta, Canada, has been approved by the China Scholarship Council (the first one in provincial universities), and 13 students can be sent abroad for degree studies every year.

There are 20 research platforms at provincial and ministerial level, such as National Innovation Base of Cell Regulation and Molecular Medicine ("111 Program"), Key Laboratory of Ministry of Education of Fermentation Engineering, Hubei Key Laboratory of Industrial Microbiology, Hubei Collaborative Innovation Center of Industrial Fermentation, Hubei International Science and Technology Cooperation Base of Food Colloid, and Food Fermentation Engineering Technology Research Center. Provincial and ministerial level research platforms. The existing 18,000 square meters of teaching and research building, all kinds of instruments and equipment, the total value of nearly 100 million yuan. In the past 5 years, it has undertaken more than 130 vertical projects such as national and provincial natural science funds, more than 270 horizontal projects of enterprises, published more than 300 SCI papers, and won 42 provincial and above awards for its achievements. The college has built teaching, research and student internship and employment bases with many key enterprises at home and abroad, such as Anqi Yeast, Liangpin Shop, Jinpai Company, Xinhuayang Bio, and Common Pharmaceutical.
