National Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center of Civil Engineering and Architecture


Founded in 2004, the Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center of Civil Engineering and Architecture has set up the Basic Laboratory of Civil Engineering (including three branches for Engineering Material, Geotechnical Engineering and Engineering Survey respectively), Engineering Structure and Digital Simulation Laboratory (including the Structural Experiment Hall and Numerical Simulation Room), Subgrade and Pavement Laboratory, Computer Room for Civil Engineering, Mechanics Laboratory, Waterproof Laboratory and Fluid Mechanics Laboratory. Currently, the Center has 71 experiment teachers, including 23 professors, 24 associate professors, 9 laboratory technicians, of whom 2 persons are senior experimenters, and 7 members of the teaching committee. In the talent team, there are 41 doctors, accounting for 57.7% of the total members, 3 Chutian Scholars, 3 persons in the “Hundred Talents Recruitment Program” of Hubei Province, 7 dtional science and technology programs, and 8 provincial research programs. The Center also publishes 9 papers included in EI / SCI / SD, 40 papers on domestic key and authoritative journals, and 2 monographs, and obtains 11 patents of invention in China.

Experimental teaching is an important part of higher education and an important way for students to apply theoretical knowledge they have learnt in class into their practical work. We know very well the importance of experimental teaching, so we will devote to our work more enthusiastically, and make contributions to the development of our students.


Postgraduate Innovative Center of Light Industry Clean Production of the Ministry of Education


The Postgraduate Innovative Center of Light Industry Clean Production of the Ministry of Education is the only open type joint education platform set up by the Ministry of Education in province-owned universities in the whole country, with an emphasis to improve postgraduate’s ability for industrial production and practical work. The Center has a research building covering 4,000 m2, as well as six pilot test laboratories for membrane separation technology, natural product extraction and purification, fermentation and segregation, and waste reclamation respectively, and is provided with the pilot test research instruments worth of RMB 10 million, as well as a supreme sterile semi-works for clean production in the light industry, so it has the conditions for cultivating the practical work ability and industrial production capacity of postgraduates. Teachers in the Center are professors, associate professors and doctors of environmental engineering, food engineering, chemical engineering and technology, and fermentation engineering. The Center exercises a management model of joint application of topics, joint implementation of horizontal topics from enterprises, centralized management of fund, joint subject study, and joint education of postgraduates and undergraduates.


1. The Center’s main functions

(1) Integrating resources. Build an open type Postgraduate Innovative Center of Light Industry Clean Production with crossover cooperation, integrate diversified resources, and explore a new model of postgraduate cultivation;

(2) Centering on enterprise’s requirements. Seek for interdisciplinary cooperation among universities, organize the upstream, midstream and downstream sectors and industrial sectors of relevant disciplines and cultivate postgraduates jointly on the basis of cooperation among industries, universities and research institutes;

(3) Realizing immediate connection with enterprises. Strengthen the cultivation of innovation capability, scientific research capability and application capability of postgraduates, and accomplish the immediate connection between postgraduates and enterprises;

(4) Giving consideration to the practical work ability of undergraduates. Since its establishment, the Center has provided support relying on several pilot test laboratories to the engineering test, graduation project and graduation thesis of Environment Engineering, Chemical Engineering and Technology, Fermentation Engineering, Biotechnology, Food Engineering and Innovation Center.

 2. The Center’s development achievements

In 10 years since the Center’s establishment, it has established a joint education relationship with more than 20 universities and large scale enterprises at home and abroad, such as Sichuan University, Wuhan University, Jilin University, China University of Geosciences, Henan University of Technology, Bayi Agricultural University, China Tex Corporation, Mengniu Group, and Hubei Guangji Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd. For a decade, the Center has finished 67 government sponsored and contract projects, applied 26 scientific research achievements in industrialization, and cultivated 22 academic masters and 54 professional postgraduates through joint education. Each year, it provides supports to about 500 undergraduates and postgraduates in our university and others. The postgraduates and undergraduates cultivated by the Center are highly identified by the enterprises of the light industry. Each year, many enterprises ask the Center to train undergraduates or postgraduates for specific posts. Some students graduated from the Center have become superintendent of environmental management organs and senior management of companies, such as Wang Chuanhui, Deputy Director of the Production Base of Mengniu Group, and Luo Dongyuan, Deputy Director of the Clean Production Center of Guangxi Environmental Protection Bureau, and bring considerable influence on the society.


 Hubei Light Industry Clean Production Center


In August 2008, clean production centers of eight sectors were established in Hubei Province, and our university was approved to establish the light industry clean production center. The Center mainly has three functions: First, organize training to the internal auditor of clean production on industrial improvement and audit of clean production in enterprises of different products in the light industry according to the state requirements for clean production and the arrangement of Hubei Provincial Government; second, carry out studies on the clean production technology of different enterprises of different products in the light industry, in particular to the standard clean production technology of different products in four aspects, namely, resource minimization, energy minimization, pollution minimization, and product maximization; third, conduct clean production audit to relevant enterprises according to the standard clean production technology and plan of Hubei Province.

 In recent ten years, the Center has finished many tasks according to the planning arrangement of Hubei Province. 1) The Light Industry Clean Production Center organized 10 training courses for 426 internal auditors of industrial enterprises in the light industry in the whole province, almost covering all large and medium-sized enterprises in the light industry in the whole province, which laid an organizational foundation for the clean production audit in the light industry. 2) Under the leadership of teachers, some postgraduates and undergraduates carried out studies of clean production technology of 150 representative products in the light industry in the whole province, and established technological standards for clean production of 66 products on the basis of innovative technology of clean production; among them, 26 new technologies have been applied to industrial production or technology improvement. 3) Undergraduates of the Center have finished clean production audit of 56 products with the help of teachers; during the audit, the innovative technology of clean production developed by the Center has been used by the enterprises audited. Through clean production audit, the core and comprehensive competitiveness of these enterprises has been greatly improved. Therefore, the Center was

awarded as the advanced unit of clean production audit by Hubei Province and Wuhan City, and was given four opportunities to introduce the clean production audit experience at the clean production audit meeting in Wuhan city and Hubei Province. Hubei government specially popularized the organic combination of our transfer of clean production technology with audit of clean production, and specific methods and experience for improving enterprise’s comprehensive competitiveness. 4) For ten years, the Center has been providing support for the teaching of Environment Engineering, and many students were hired by enterprises in advance after they finished the clean production audit together with their teacher. So far, there have been 26 graduates working in clean production audit companies or in relevant government sectors responsible for clean production management; for example, Luo Dongyuan is now working as Deputy Director in Guangxi Clean Production Center, responsible for management of clean production in the whole province.


Hubei Key Laboratory for Ecologic Restoration of Rivers and Lakes and Utilization of Algas


Hubei Key Laboratory for Ecologic Restoration of Rivers and Lakes and Utilization of Algas was founded in December 2013 in Hubei University of Technology. Supported by the School of Civil Engineering, Architecture and Environment, the Laboratory gives full play to its comprehensive interdisciplinary strengths, and it is established based on its advantageous research fields, including the healthy assessment and ecological restoration of rivers and lakes, microbial ecology and algae elimination in rivers and lakes, physiological ecology of algae and efficient culture of special microalgae, efficient separation of high value-added products from aquatic lives, ecological water conservancy and Sponge City technology. It has 6 special research offices. The Key Laboratory mainly carries out studies of eutrophication and algal blooms in open waters, such as rivers and lakes, and it aims to develop core technologies of algae control and elimination, large-scale culture and reutilization of microalgae, ecological restoration and reconstruction, design, construction and landscape restoration of ecological water conservancy projects, and design of sponge city, form systematic programs and packaged technologies, and formulate company standard for algal blooms control technology, and industrial standard for ecological water conservancy, landscape design and reconstruction technology. At present, the Key Laboratory has more than 60 full-time and part-time faculty, among the full-time faculty, there are 3 distinguished professors of the Chutian Scholars, 2 distinguished professors of the “Hundred Talents Recruitment Program”, 25 professors and 20 associate professors. Most of them have a doctor’s degree, and those under the age of 50 account for 80% of the total faculty. The Key Laboratory is well provided with research facilities. It covers an area of more than 3,500 m2; besides, it also has a pilot test base covering an area of 15 Mu, and has powerful functions in water, electricity, ventilation and sewage treatment. The Laboratory has more than 130 common and special apparatus and devices with a value above RMB 100,000, and the total value reaches RMB 50 million.

In recent three years, the Key Laboratory has formed vivid features and sound development momentum. It has started more than 30 new research topics of provincial and ministerial level, and has 17 national basic research programs to be or being studied; the research fund has amounted to more than RMB 20 million. Among them, there are 11 National Natural Science Foundation programs, 1 national water pollution abatement and control project in the “12th Five-Year” Plan period, 3 national key research & development plans in the “13th Five-Year Plan” period,1 national “973” program, and 1 important national cooperation project. In recent three years, it has published 31 papers which are included in SCI / EI, and won two provincial and ministerial first prizes for progress in science and technology. In teaching, it has won one prize for “Hubei Famous Teacher” and one first prize of teaching award among colleges and universities in Hubei Province.

 Following the principles of “openness, flexibility, cooperation, and competition”, the Key Laboratory actively creates conditions to open outside and conduct scientific-technical cooperation and academic exchanges. It also strengthens internal management and gives full play to the role of the Academic Committee in planning and guidance, formulates management rules and regulations to ensure the orderly and high performance operation of the laboratory, with an aim to cultivate high-caliber talents who are engaged in study of relevant theories, technical research & development and service of the water environment and water ecology of rivers and lakes for Hubei Province, provide technical and theoretical support to the water pollution treatment, water ecology restoration and water environment protection of Hubei Province, and promote the academic research, application development and transfer of research results of the Key Laboratory to a new stage.


Green Building and Urban Ecological Environment  Collaborative Innovation Center of Hubei University of Technology


Founded in 2016, the Green Building and Urban Ecological Environment Collaborative Innovation Center of Hubei University of Technology has established 6 research teams for the fields of green building and urban ecological environment, including the fields of urban water affairs and ecological restoration of rivers and lakes, ecological and environmental geotechnics, geological hazard prevention theory and technology, civil engineering materials and structures, bridge structure safety and monitoring, green building and industrialization of construction. At present, the Center has 74 members in all, including 59 doctors, accounting for 79.7% of the total members, 18 professors, 22 associate professors, 33 lecturers, and 1 teaching assistant, and among them, there are 2 Chutian Scholars, 10 doctoral supervisors,1 person enjoying the government subsidies, 3 persons in the Hubei New Century High-qualification Talent Engineering, and 3 young and middle aged experts with outstanding contributions in Hubei Province.

 The Center integrates relevant theories and technologies of green building and urban environment to the traditional Civil Engineering, Architecture, Urban Planning, Landscape and Gardens, Building Materials, and Environmental Engineering, forming a discipline cluster. It has reached an advanced level at home in slope ecological restoration technology, ecological restoration of urban water bodies, ecological restoration of impervious surface in cities, design of ecological building materials, and prevention of engineering and environmental disasters. By 2016, it had cultivated more than 70 postgraduates and 300 undergraduates with innovation capabilities, and preliminarily formed a cluster of innovation organizations and relevant organs and realized the integration of scientific and technological innovation with education resources. It also promotes the cooperation with the Institute of Rock and Soil Mechanics of Chinese Academy of Sciences. On the basis of the Framework Agreement signed with the Institute of Rock and Soil Mechanics of Chinese Academy of Sciences, in 2016, six students were admitted by the joint education program of the Institute of Rock and Soil Mechanics and our university. Some doctoral supervisors of our university also participated in the cultivation of doctors of the Institute of Rock and Soil Mechanics.

High Performance Materials and Structural Engineering Institute


The High Performance Materials and Structural Engineering Institute was formally founded in 2011, and it grew out of the Teaching and Research Office of Structural Engineering which was founded in 1997 and later renamed as the Department of Architectural Engineering. At present, there are 12 teachers and researchers in the institute, including 3 professors, 3 associate professors, and 10 persons have a doctor’s degree. It is a research institute in the field of civil engineering and structural engineering with theoretical research on fiber-reinforced high-performance cement-based composite materials as the guide, experimental study on fiber-reinforced cement-basedtest pieces and components as the basis, and application of high performance materials and structural engineering as the target. For a long time, it has been devoting to scientific research on the material properties, structural performance, structural calculation, and structural test and analysis of civil engineering, and has finished two programs of the National Natural Science Foundation in terms of research & development of fibrous concrete materials as well as performance and engineering application of fiber-reinforced concrete components: the evaluation method of assorted fiber concrete toughness with controlled deflection and fracture width and the study on the basic performance of new earthquake-resistant frame joint made of high-ductility cement-based composite materials. It has also finished 10 provincial and ministerial programs, including 4 Hubei Natural Science Foundation programs: the mesomechanics study on the damage evolution and toughen of brittle materials, the study on the key technologies of applying cement-based materials to beam-column joints, the study on the seismic performance and optimal design of PVC fiber ring frame joints and the obfuscation of crack control of concrete structures in ordinary atmosphere environment. It also finished 3 programs of Hubei Provincial Department of Education: the mechanical characteristics and numerical simulation of civil engineering structures reinforced with composite materials, the experimental study on the seismic performance of concrete shear wall enhanced with assorted fiber, and the study on the reinforcement technology of wire mesh fiber reinforced cement mortar. In recent years, members of the Institute have published more than 80 theses, of which 20 theses are included in EI. It has obtained three authorized patents, namely “High Performance Concrete Containing Composite Fiber” (patent number: ZL201210467033.8), “Fibrous Concrete Connector for Direct Tensile Test” (ZL201320029446.8), and “Test Unit of Bent Toughness of Fibrous Concrete through Disc Process” (ZL201620113784.3).


 Membrane Technology Institute of Hubei University of Technology


The Membrane Technology Institute of Hubei University of Technology has a pilot test base covering 3,000 m2 and an equipment processing workshop of 600 m2. It is provided with more than twenty key devices which can be used for pilot test in industrial production, such as ultrafine pulverizer, continuous fermentation tank, reaction kettle, multi-functional extractor of active substances of plants, electrodialyzer, multiple membrane separation, disc centrifuge, low-temperature inspissator, spray dryer, and freeze dryer, as well as important analysis and inspection devices, such as liquid chromatograph, ultraviolet spectrophotometer, electronic balance, and Kieldahl azotometer, which can be used for timely analysis and detection of the test results. The Institute also has the ability for design, manufacturing, installation and commissioning of different membrane separation devices. Aiming at the study of efficient use of vegetable protein and animal protein as well as study of type selection of corresponding industrial equipment, the Institute also sets up a small-scale industrial production line of biological active peptide, which can produce peptide products of different protein sources; the production line has obtained the production license for marketing.

 The institute has 46 members, including 3 professors, 8 associate professors, 4 senior engineers, 6 engineers, 10 lecturers and 15 postgraduates. The Membrane Technology Institute has for a long time devoted to the innovation research of clean production technology, cyclic utilization technology, and equipment industrialization in the light industry. It has finished hundreds of subject studies in fields of food, beverage, fermentation, pharmaceutical, biology, traditional Chinese medicine, natural product extraction, and environmental protection using frontier technologies such as membrane separation technology integrated with extraction using ultrasonic and microwave, chromatographic fractionation and biologic enzymolysis. The Institute has published more than two hundred scientific papers, and many research findings have won provincial or municipal awards for scientific and technical progress. It has published two monographs, namely Light Industry Clean Production and Theory and Practice of Clean Production. Since 2010, it has submitted 43 national invention patents for approval, and obtained 26 authorized patents. It pays special attention to the study of reutilization of waste from processing in the light industry. It has realized industrial production of fish oligopeptide using the offal left from preliminary processing of fish and similar aquatic products, industrial production of corn antialcoholic peptide using corn protein reclaimed from corn starch production wastewater, and industrial production of silkworm pupa protein peptide using the silkworm pupa protein reclaimed from the production wastewater of silkworm pupa; it has also finished the pilot test study of production of oligopeptide using cottonseed meal and soybean meal. In recent ten years, it has finished 56 research programs, and 26 research findings have been applied to industrial production.  


 Sino-French Joint Research Center for Rock and Soil Mechanics and Concrete Materials


Sino-French Joint Research Center for Rock and Soil Mechanics and Concrete Materials was founded in April 2006. Main research contents of the center include multidimensional experimental study and model study of rock-soil medium (including rock, soil and green concrete), and the research area covers shale gas development, geological disposal of nuclear waste, hot dry rock, durability of concrete materials, and environmental geotechnics. Under the leadership of the chief scientist Shao Jianfu, French distinguished professor and expert of the National Recruitment Program of Global Experts, and the responsible person Frédéric SKOCZYLAS in the Hundred Talents Recruitment Program of Hubei Province, the center aims to obtain scientific research achievements in a leading position in domestic China to promote civil engineering to catch up with the international advanced level. It will also cultivate some high-caliber, creative and aggressive talents, and set up an academic team with a rational structure, team work spirit, and strong scientific research ability and innovation capability. In addition, it will strive to make big progress in scientific research, base construction and talent training, build it to a center engaged in technical promotion and demonstration in relevant fields, and obtain the qualification for awarding doctor’s degree of the discipline. At present, there are 11 members in the center, including 1 person in the National Recruitment Program of Global Experts, 1 person in the “Hundred Talents Recruitment Program” of Hubei Province, 2 “Chutian Students” of the Chutian Scholar Plan of Hubei Province, 5 persons with the post-doctoral work experience, and 6 persons with a doctor’s degree obtained in foreign universities.

 Since the Center’s establishment in April 2016, it has obtained rich research achievements, including 4 programs of National Natural Science Foundation and 1 program of Hubei Natural Science Foundation. It has published 5 SCI papers, 3 EI papers, and 1 paper has been included in SCI1. In addition, it has obtained 1 authorized invention patent, 4 authorized patents of utility model, and submitted 8 applications of new invention patents (8 applications have been accepted). In June 2017, Hubei University of Technology and Centrale Lille signed a scientific-technical cooperation agreement formally, which realized complementarities and acquired good results. Main tasks mentioned in the agreement cover scientific research, discipline construction, building of teams, talent training, and academic exchange. The cooperation can help to produce scientific research achievements leading at home and abroad in the field of civil engineering, build a high-caliber talent team with powerful scientific research ability and innovation capability, further improve the capability of the talent team of Sino-French Joint Research Center for Rock and Soil Mechanics and Concrete Materials, and make it a scientific research team influential in relevant fields at home. On the basis of this agreement, both parties carry out the doctoral candidate joint education program, and both parties send postgraduate students to participate in this program. The center actively helps the graduating postgraduates of Hubei University of Technology obtain the scholarship of China Scholarship Council to study the doctor’s program in National University of Lille.

Rock & Soil Engineering Institute


The Rock & Soil Engineering Institute has about 30 core rock-soil experts, most of whom have obtained a doctor’s degree in geotechnical engineering, road engineering, ecological engineering, or bridge engineering, and they form a team with a rational professionalism and age structure, profound theoretical knowledge, rich practical experience, and outstanding innovation capability and hard work spirit. The institute has a strong technical force, including 2 persons enjoying the government subsidies, 1 person in the National Recruitment Program of Global Experts, 1 person as young and middle aged expert with outstanding contributions in Hubei Province, 1 person in the New Century Excellent Talent Program of the Ministry of Education, 2 persons in the New Century Excellent Talent Program in Hubei Province (above level 2), 5 persons in the New Century Excellent Talent Program in Hubei Province (level 3), 2 distinguished professors of the “Hundred Talents Recruitment Program” of Hubei Province, 3 Chutian Scholars and 8 doctoral supervisors. The Institute has more than 80 postgraduates and also invites more than 10 adjunct professors from large-scale enterprises, such as Hubei Provincial Communications Investment Group Co., Ltd., Hubei Provincial Communications Planning and Design Institute Co., Ltd., China Railway Major Bridge Engineering Group Co., Ltd., and China Railway 11th Bureau Group.

 In recent ten years, the Rock & Soil Engineering Research Institute has been maintaining a focus on some key and common problems, such as the ecological restoration technology of bare soil caused by engineering construction as well as damage of rock and soil and underground water pollution caused by human activities. On the basis of key research programs of the state and province, the Institute continues conducting systematic and in-depth studies, and concentrates on the main research areas including ecological protection technology of road slopes, ecological reinforcement and restoration technology of embankment and pavement, reutilization technology of solid wastes produced from ecological road engineering, ecological safety prevention and control technology of road engineering, etc. In recent ten years, the Institute of Rock and Soil Mechanics has made greatprogress in the research area concerning ecological road. For example, it has finished more than 80 research programs entrusted by the Ministry of Science and Technology, National Natural Science Foundation, Ministry of Water Resources, Ministry of Transport, Ministry of Education, Science and Technology Department of Hubei Province, Department of Housing and Urban-rural Development of Hubei Province, Department of Transportation of Hubei Province and some other superior departments, including the State “973” Program, National Key Research & Development Plan in the “13th Five-Year Plan” period, National Water Pollution Control and Treatment Science and Technology Major Project, National Natural Science Foundation Program and so on; besides, it also participated in more than 30 engineering ecological restoration projects and ecological protection of rock-soil disasters, obtained more than 40 national patents, and won more than 10 science and technology awards granted by the province and ministers. Most of its scientific research achievements have reached the international advanced level. Among them, the Water Bloom Mechanism and Prevention & Control Technology in the Tributary Stream of Three Gorges Reservoir won the First Prize for Scientific and Technological Progress in Hubei Province; Slope Protection and Ecological Restoration Technology won the Second Prize for Promotion of Scientific and Technological Achievements in Hubei Province. Vegetation and Concrete Slope Greening Technology won the Second Prize for Progress in Science and Technology in Hubei Province. Study on Ecological Restoration of Highways and Landscape Construction in Mountainous Areas won the Second Prize for Progress in Science and Technology in Hubei Province. Environmental Geotechnics Technology of Underground Water Pollution Treatment and Site Ecological Restoration and its Application won the Second Prize for Progress in Science and Technology in Hubei Province. Reinforcement Mechanism and Stable Control Technology of Highly Filled Embankment and Key Technologies for Restoration of the Original Ecology of Highway Slopes won the Third Prize for Progress in Science and Technology in Wuhan City. The Institute of Rock and Soil Mechanics has received a better reputation in this field in the whole country during its development and growth. Its members also gain more influence. Many persons take the important post of academic leaders, such as deputy chairman, director or committeeman in Chinese Society for Rock Mechanics & Engineering, Chinese Society of Hydraulic Engineers, Committee for Rock and Soil Mechanics, Chinese Society of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics, and Chinese Institution of Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering of China Civil Engineering Society.  

 With a decade’s development and accumulation of experience, the Rock & Soil Engineering Institute has gone further and further in scientific research; it has gained a stronger research capability and a host of original research findings. In particular, in recent five years, along with the further development of scientific research & development, it has strengthened cooperation with enterprises. This has poured new blood to the Institute, as a result of which, the Institute is becoming more and more powerful; it has obtained an increasingly prominent brand effect and more vivid features, imposed a good effect in this industry, and reached a leading position at home in many research fields. It has also achieved outstanding results in terms of talent training, production practice, scientific-technical service, application of research results, and scientific and technological innovation, and made outstanding contributions to the scientific research and teaching in the field of geotechnical engineering and ecological protection in China. In recent five years, the Institute of Rock and Soil Mechanics has finished more than 50 national programs and provincial and ministerial research programs, such as the National 973 Program, National Key Projects in the “13th Five-Year Plan” Period, National Water Pollution Control and Treatment Science and Technology Major Project, National Natural Science Foundation Program, and so on, and received more than RMB 23 million of scientific research funds. Besides, it also obtained 9 provincial and ministerial prizes, 12 National Invention Patents, and published 5 monographs and about 300 academic papers, with more than 100 papers included in SCI, EI and ISTP.


BIM Engineering Research Center, Hubei University of Technology


BIM (Building Information Modelling) Engineering Research Center of Hubei University of Technology is an institute of academic research and engineering application engaged in the technical study and scientific & technological innovation of BIM. It’s devoted to the study of key technologies of BIM in the whole engineering consulting process, and aims to provide the latest BIM research & development supports and consulting services for the industry, so as to help relevant design, construction, and operation & maintenance units in China’s architecture field to realize digital transformation.

 Through theoretical research and engineering practice, BIM Engineering Research Center aims to cultivate some research-based and application-oriented talents who have a grasp of theoretical research and practical application of BIM technologies and who can meet the requirements for IT reform in the whole life cycle of BIM in China’s building industry in the future.
